Are you a hindu?

This was the question the guy sitting next to me in the bus asked during a recent trip of mine to kancheepuram. I believe he wanted to know as to what language I speak to make a conversation. So I said "naa tamilzh dhaan" ("I am a tamil guy") realizing the guy was also a tamilian (written all over his face).
The guy first wondered if I was a North Indian, but something made him certain I wasn't a southie *duh*. But the question he threw at me asking for my religion really irritated me. I was hell pissed and was so tempted to ask "why the F*** dyu want to know that?". But then I realized it was probably just a lack of proficiency in expression. Or it it stands testament to how much religion and cast are ingrained in this country.
I'v never asked such a question, and rarely been asked. And I see no reason to. Do you ever ask someone such a question? How do you feel when someone asks such a question?

Samy I have come across alot of situations like that. This post and that Qn resembles a very important thing abt our society. Like u said it's either the lack of proficiency in expression of that guy or it's how much religion/race has overtaken us. But in this guy's case Im sure it was the first.

Some ppl have asked me r u from Iraq? LOL WTF do I look like an Iraqi? But I guess most ppl try to use that sort of Qns for identification and it's really not right.

Probably. Esp since he felt I was not a south indian. Maybe he thought I was on a pilgrimage or sumthin ;)) ha ha

no. I was avoiding that topic. Besides he seemed to have asked that just to find in which language to converse. On top of that, that fellow dozed off on me in a short while n only woke up once in a while to apologize :)

a friggin Desi arsehole asked me on a pedestrian cross walk - "Are you from India ?" ... I was gonna kick his nuts off.. some people are just complete bollocks man.. just got to give them a sarcastic snap and you will actually end up enjoying the conversation...

to the hindu question you should have answered something like - No I am a [some other religion] with a non-matching religious name.. I bet it would be fun to watch the fellow's expression.. a true "Kodak moment"! :))
